Embraced the moments of awe

Stood beneath a giant tree and realized how much history was hovering above you? That the tree has seen generation after generation live, laugh, love, and move on.

Looked at the technology around you. Not your smartphone. I’m talking about the simple things like a light bulb. Or the heating system. Or your stove. Or the glass windows that keep you shielded from the outside.

We lived in a time where these technological innovations didn’t exist yet they play such fundamental roles in our lives today.

Really noticed the smile on your friend’s, family’s or lover’s face?

You noticed the line of wrinkles around their eyes, the twinkle emanating from their pupils, the slightly crooked tooth you find endearing in their smile.

Looked up to see how blue the sky was and the sun playing peekaboo behind the cotton candy clouds? Or started to guess what shapes the clouds made as if you were five years old again.

Were grateful that you had something good in your life.

That you still have your vision, your hearing, your ability to speak, write, read and listen. Your four limbs to move and conquer this world. Grateful for a world where smallpox can’t kill you and antibiotics stop most modern diseases.

Or grateful for the people in your life? Maybe the mother or father that supported you. Or the friends who took you in when your family wouldn’t. The great teacher or mentor that radically changed your life.

Or the signifiant other that loved you the way you deserve to be loved. Or perhaps the animals that came into your life when no human could get in.

Watched the stars in a sky move around and dance?

You watched the flicker and shine amidst the blueish purple sky.

Woke up to catch a sunrise and realize everyday is the last time you get to live that day? So you might as well make it count.

Buried your feet into the sand and let the sound of crashing waves overcome you? And you just stared out into the sea of nothing instead of staring into your screen of nothing.

Sunk your head into a soft pillow and warm blankets?

And really feel the comfort of your bed taking you in to heal you after a long day of fighting against the world.

Laughed? Laughed so hard that your cheeks and jaws were hurting that you needed to lightly massage them in slow circles with your fingers.

Opened up to a stranger? And perhaps realized vulnerability isn’t as hard as it seems. It just takes an open mind and little leap of faith.

Signed up for something so out of your comfort zone? Like a stand-up comic show or sky diving.

Or just apologizing to someone after five or ten or fifty years. It’s never too late if you don’t let it be.

With the hustle and bustle of life going around us, we forget to take in the little moments of beauty in our lives. And the things that I believe really make it worth living.

So when you’re feeling down, take a moment to remember something you haven’t done in a while. Something simple. And go do it.

Embrace the moments of awe that are around us every single day.
