I got my first freelance client towards the end of November 2020. It’s been more than three years of me being a freelance writer.

The experiences I’ve had with multiple clients have taught me it’s a brutal world out there. With the advent of generative AI, several writers have lost their jobs. I’ve managed to retain all my clients, while also prospecting new ones.

The journey hasn’t been easy. I’ve had to upskill, manage a team, and learn about new tools I’d never have experimented with otherwise. This has allowed me to grow my business to multiple six figures, and also hire a team of writers, editors, and SEO experts.

And all the growth — both personal and professional — has been possible because of the three types of clients I met along my journey.

In this post, I want to talk about the types of clients that I’ve seen as a freelance writer and how they’ve shaped my journey so far. I’m not going to mention any names, but be prepared for some interesting anecdotes.

If you’re a freelance writer, I’m sure this article will either make you smile or give you some insight into what you can expect from this journey.
