Microsoft to deprecate Paint in the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

Microsoft has published a page on its support site containing a list of Windows features that will be removed or deprecated in the upcoming Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. Among these features is MS Paint, the beloved extremely basic image editing application.

MS Paint will be deprecated, not removed; you’ll still be able to keep using the application for the time being. However, it being deprecated means Microsoft will no longer provide updates and it may be removed in a later release.

Paint has been included with Windows since the beginning, when Microsoft included a licensed version of PC Paintbrush by ZSoft Corporation with Windows 1.0. In Windows 3.0, Microsoft included an internally developed “Paintbrush” in lieu of ZSoft’s PC Paintbrush. With Windows 95, Microsoft renamed Paintbrush to Paint and updated its interface to the one used until Windows 7. Windows 7 included a more modern Paint, using Microsoft’s “Ribbon” UI. This version of Paint is still included today in Windows 10.

Let’s hope Microsoft doesn’t remove Paint without a replacement, as it’s an invaluable tool for those who just need to quickly modify an image. As a matter of fact, I used MS Paint in combination with Print Screen multiple times for saving game settings in my Dell Inspiron 5577 review.
