In a recent study conducted by researchers from the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli in Italy, a surprising discovery was made: microplastics were found within arterial plaques. These tiny plastic particles, measuring less than 5 millimeters in length, were present in approximately 60% of the plaques removed from patients with atherosclerosis

Here are the key findings from the study:

Microplastics in Arterial Plaques:

  • About 60% of study participants who had undergone a carotid endarterectomy (a surgical procedure to remove plaque from the carotid artery) had measurable amounts of polyethylene within the plaques extracted from their arteries.
  • Additionally, 12% of these patients had polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in their arterial plaques.

Health Implications:

  • Individuals with microplastics in their arterial plaque were 4.5 times more likely to experience a heart attack, stroke, or death within approximately 34
