Two steps that changed the game
It’s not about a story that blew up, it’s mostly about cracking the code. And by that, I mean finding out what works best.
First, I focused on increasing internal views (from Medium distribution, including Medium’s homepage, app, emails, and social media accounts). I know you can’t control who is going to click on your story but I stopped posting on Facebook group chats and begging for views. I used to do that for years but that’s only increasing external referrals and we don’t want that.
What really changed the game for me, was realizing what readers want to read more of. I started to analyze my previous pieces and what subjects people were more interested in reading about. I took those themes and started to experiment with them more.
And that was it. Give people what they want and stop advertising your work to other social media.
