It is the best time to apply blockchain technology to real-world voting.

Blockchain technology will help e-government reinforces election administration, and to avoid election manipulation through its features of incorruptibility, high-transparency, and decentralization.

The First Blockchain Voting System In The World

Sierra Leone is the first government to use blockchain technology in its voting system designed by Agora, a Swiss-based blockchain startup to monitor the voting in early March 2018. Despite the fact that it is the first blockchain voting system ever, it remains quite primary due to the lack of smartphone usage.

There were 3.1 million registered voters are choosing a new president for the next five years from among 16 candidates. After the voting, the staff of Agora would calculate the result manually and registered them on blockchain ledger.

Although the e-voting process in Sierra Leone didn’t fully display the value of decentralized, transparent, and incorruptible blockchain technology, the spirit of innovation made them the first country to apply blockchain technology in a national government election in history.

After Sierra Leone pilots blockchain-based voting for national elections, other places like Zug (Switzerland), Ukraine, Thailand, Hangzhou (China), Tsukuba (Japan), Canada, West Virginia (United States), and so forth followed suit.

Korea’s Largest Opposition Party “Liberty Korea” Partners with ioeX

South Korea’s largest opposition party, Liberty Korea Party (LKP), held a press conference on Jan. 31 to announce the collaboration with ioeX, a Taiwan-based startup, to build a blockchain-based voting system which adopts embedded dual-chain system of ioeX and will be officially launched in March 2019.

The customized ioeX blockchain platform allows LKP to conduct party elections and to record activities of representatives. Moreover, the platform will include a petition function for gathering public opinion as well as providing up-to-date records of representative activity for the general public. Liberty Korea Party floor leader Na Kyung-won stated that the incorruptibility and trackability of blockchain technology may facilitate party elections in the press conference.

The issue has become the focus of attention in many countries; however, some people are concerned that the system might fail to verify whether or not the votes are made by the voter themselves. Blockchain-based voting is a double-edged sword, and from the writer’s perspective, the impartiality and fairness of elections rely on all the participants in the process eventually.
