Whenever the subject of money comes up, it’s like a different part of the human soul wakes up. And you can’t blame people for behaving that way about money. They have probably been burned in the past.

Money is a delicate subject. Some people don’t even want to hear about it. I am not talking about discussions about economics. This is about offering money and asking for money.

I told a friend recently that most people would rather buy you as much drink as you want on a Friday night than help you with tuition or support your startup. It is one of those things with people and money. But my friend gave me another perspective. The buying of drinks is a scenario that has to be recreated before it can happen again. Meanwhile, if you pay tuition or support a startup, they can call to meet you to ask for more money. It is never a one-time thing.

At certain points or another, we run into situations where we need to raise money fast. And we get into the mode of calling friends and enemies. This is particularly common when trying to get that first startup capital.

The good responses are those that tell you either a YES or a NO as a straightforward answer. They are good answers…
