SDGcounting is an initiative to help understand the many, organizations, UN, country, and other systems that will be keeping track of progress and results on the new Sustainable Development Goals. Twitter: @sdgcounting

We anticipate that there will be thousands of organizations (UN, countries, funders, social enterprises, foundations, businesses) setting up or revising systems to keep track of some or all of the Sustainable Development Goals.

While we applaud the ‘what gets measured gets done’ spirit, we want to try to strategically track and organize information relevant to the data reporting elements of the SDGs.

OVERVIEW

The UN Millennium Development Goals (MDG) were established in 2000 and they expire this year 2015. The UN has monitored and reported on the progress of MDGs every year.

The conclusion of MDG 2015 Report is that there have been many successes, but there’s still lots of work left to do. There is great interest to extend the MDGs beyond 2015, and continue them as UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

MONITORING

The Sustainable Development Solutions Network has been putting out reports on how to monitor SDGs.

We believe the Sustainable Development Solutions Network would be part of the monitoring body. The Wall Street Journal has reported on the possibility of using opinion surveys to track goals.

It looks like SDGs will continue beyond 2015, and that the UN together with a network of organizations and participating nations will be monitoring the progress of these goals.
