There’s disagreement within the group. Many are in favour of calling the ex-cons’ bluff, but many more others don’t want to risk their lives, or those of their kids. They’ve alerted the other cities but their comrades won’t come to their aid — not in time anyway. The nearest city lies hundreds of kilometers across the desert and the deadline is only a few hours away. Isam, one of the TWS leaders, has offered to speak to the besiegers. Talking won’t do them much good, not with those kind of people. Diplomacy is in hyperspace, travelling away from here.
