Help people from flood-affected Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia!

You probably haven’t seen this on TV, but it is happening right now in the heart of Europe.

If you do not have friends or relatives living in Serbia, Bosnia or Croatia, and you aren’t following what is going on on professional tennis courts, you probably have no idea that right now, a catastrophe of Biblical proportions is happening to the people in these three small Central European countries.

It all started a week ago with severe rains, the biggest we had in over a century. As a result, rain-swollen rivers and surging water course through towns and villages, overflowing across streets into homes, causing landslides and other disasters.

The danger of further floods is still present, and will be for another few days. For now, over 100,000 people had to leave their homes, over 25,000 have been evacuated in the past 72 hours, and the situation with missing people and casualties is still unclear, although the numbers are rapidly rising.

A village in Bosnia.

Tens of thousands of local people have been working to protect their villages and towns, but this is an overwhelming task.

Several towns (Obrenovac, Doboj, Bijeljina…) are almost entirely under water.

Schools and kindergarten are closed, and this is considered to be the worst flood in history. The situation is so dramatic, that entire families have lost their homes in the floods. Finding a shelter is a real adventure for many.

Three nations that were at war only 20 years ago, now are working together to minimize the consequences of this natural disaster.
