Day of Silence is a student-led international event that brings attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. Students from middle school to college take a vow of silence in an effort to encourage schools and classmates to address the problem of anti-LGBT behavior by illustrating the silencing effect of bullying and harassment on LGBT students and those perceived to be LGBT (GLSEN).

On Friday, April 15, Lincoln students pledged to be silent from 8:00–15:30 (unless they had a major assessment in class that necessitated talk). Over 50 students and staff pledged.

A pledge card was given to all participants in English or Spanish which indicated that they were vowing to be silent. And they wore it publicly so they were easily identifiable.

Then students went about their work day silently for support, while also becoming strategic communicators in silence.

Students also explained what they were going to do to end anti-LGBT silence.

Coming up… “Breaking the Silence”. A blogpost about debriefing “Day of Silence” and sharing reflections from this activity.
