“Pay as a group” Tilt button

There is no easy way to make online purchases as groups. Tilt should create an API that allows users to create a private campaign that, when funded, is used to make a purchase on a third-party website.

Think back to the last time you volunteered to make a purchase intended for a group. It can be anything from reserving an Airbnb for a group vacation to ordering food for you and your friends on your DoorDash account. Did you feel that little tinge of reluctancy because you knew getting reimbursed would be a pain?

People often want to purchase items as a group, but businesses rarely offer a way to do so at the point of sale. Seeking reimbursements is cumbersome for people, but building group payment infrastructure is just as difficult for businesses. Tilt can currently support these group payments, but only if people navigate away from third party commerce sites to Tilt’s platform and create a campaign for the item. This process adds lots of friction to the purchase, degrading the user experience.

I think Tilt should expand upon their Tilt/open API that is currently targeted at pre-ordering and expand its functionality so that ecommerce websites can integrate group payments into their platforms.

A “Pay as a group” button powered by Tilt would allow users to create micro Tilt campaigns to which they could invite their friends to contribute. When everyone has paid their share, the funds would be sent to the service provider, completing the transaction.

Here’s how a “Pay as a group” button might work on Airbnb’s site:

User can add their friends to the purchase — if friends are not on Tilt, they will be emailed an invitation to join.
Once everyone has been added, the user can activate the campaign — all from within the third-party’s website
