If you’ve got time for a quick read today, then you’ve got time for a quick chuckle. “The Amazing Adventures of Macro-Microbe,” by the multi-talented Mark Budman, is a piece that appeared in the “Flash Funny” folio of DB 19, Summer 2014, featuring works of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction — all less than 750 words. With perfect tongue-in-cheek delivery, Budman tells the story of a calculating but charismatic microbe with a plan that will rock the pharmaceutical industry… or lead to his untimely end. Read on to find out the fate of the most charming microorganism you’ve never met.

“Macro-Microbe parked his car and proceeded on foot, which was a misnomer because he had no feet. Typical for Manhattan, no one gave him a second glance except for a homeless woman who tried to sell him hand sanitizer.

“I’m here for a job interview with Mr. Smith,” Macro-Microbe told the receptionist once he entered the building of NextDrug Corporation. He didn’t face her because he had no face. She didn’t face him because she didn’t care.”

Mark Budman is a writer, editor, inventor, engineer, translator, interpreter, photographer and a wearer of many other hats. He was born in the former Soviet Union but now resides in Boston. Mark follows the fine American tradition: a person moves to the US, learns the language, takes any job he can find, complains bitterly, but perseveres. Mark also writes flash fiction, so he knows how to express himself concisely, before the reader gets bored. He loves to travel so he can compare foreign countries to America and congratulate himself on the fine choice he made 35 years ago when he came here. He loves his family so he can get emotional support and an audience for complaints. He loves his cat, especially when the cat bites him on his ankles. Above all, he loves his readers, in sickness and in health. For more of Mark’s writing and othe projects, visit his website at markbudman.com.
