Introducing Spectator

A few weeks ago Snapchat started selling Spectacles, a pair of sunglasses that record short bursts of video.

From The Verge

Spectacles record video in a new circular format, and when played inside of Snapchat users can pan their device around to reveal different parts of the video.

However, people have been uploading these videos to Instagram and Twitter, where they don’t play quite so elegantly.

So, shortly after the launch I had the idea to write an app that plays Spectacles videos uploaded to Instagram or Twitter in the same way Snapchat does.

I got the basics up and running in one night, and spent a few days polishing it up. I’ve named it Spectator, and it’s now available for download right here 😊.

You use Spectator by copying links to Spectacles videos on Instagram or Twitter, then launching the app. It’ll prompt you to play the video you have copied shortly after launch, and keeps a list of the videos you’ve recently watched. If you’re looking for a list of videos to try out I’m curating one here. Enjoy!

Update: Spectator was renamed “Shady” to due to a request from Snap.
