I’m an avid colorist.

I took up adult coloring to reduce stress, dissolve worry, and increase mindfulness.

Research on adult coloring is limited. But the studies that have been done have shown promising results.

Neuroscientist Dr, Stan Rodski says coloring can cause positive changes in both heart rate and brain waves prompted by three elements: repetition, pattern, and detail.

A study in Art Therapy, The Journal of the American Art Therapy Association supports the idea that coloring mandalas or geometric patterns in particular can reduce stress and anxiety.

People active in Facebook adult coloring groups say coloring has helped them with a wide variety of mental and even physical health challenges like:

  • stress
  • depression
  • anxiety
  • grief
  • loneliness
  • focus
  • creativity
  • getting out of your head
  • distraction from chronic pain
  • reducing technology use
