Diwali is the biggest Hindu festival in India, it's the festival of lights. It signifies the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after he defeated Ravana. It symbolizes the victory of good over evil.

Diwali is celebrated by many non-Hindu communities as well. Jainism celebrated Diwali because on this day Lord Mahavira achieved nirvana; In Sikhism, this day is celebrated in the honor of Guru Hargobind Ji.

With Diwali comes Diwali cleaning, which is a real ball for all desi moms. They love to order everyone to clean their rooms and this order is followed by a thorough investigation to check if you pass the cleanliness test. They love to have us scrubbing floors, polishing silverware, and clearing out cobwebs.

We clean our homes before Diwali because we invite goddess Lakshmi into our homes praying for peace and prosperity. She brings a lot of wealth, success, and joy into our life.
