The World’s Most Powerful Engine

It’s not what you think

What is the world’s most powerful engine? It’s not a American muscle V8, or even a Italian V12. It’s not a jet engine or even that of a locomotive. Though my 2 year old might say its “Gordon” from the “Thomas And Friends” series. “He’s fastest and best, and pulls the express.”

No, the world’s most powerful engine is not one that is powered by horses, gas, or one that runs on motor oil or even jet fuel, steam or coal.

The Guiness Book Of World Records lists the worlds most powerful rocket engine as the RD-170, and the world’s most powerful jet engine as the General Electric GE90-115B. But it’s instead one that’s powered by people each day/hour searching for jobs, inspiration, concert tickets, restaurants, tips and how-to’s, and even other people.

The worlds most powerful engine is of course the SEARCH ENGINE.

Today we think back and ask ourselves “What would we do without search?” How would we find a doctor? How would we find a job? How would we find out movie times? How quickly we forget how to use the YellowPages. Of course they really aren’t as useful as they use to be, huh?

The modern day search engine is great. But are we really harnessing all of its potential power? Can it be used for more than just the simple search?

The Problem

One of the most discussed and debated topic of our time is that of renewable energy. Many politicians and environmentalists argue for wind, solar, hydroelectric and geothermal. All of these options are great. But they all are still dependent on geographic location or weather. And they are expensive for the individual.

The Numbers

According to Statistic Brain, this is what Google’s annual search statistics looked like in 2013.

  1. Annual Number of Google Searches: 2,161,530,000,000
  2. Average Searches Per-Day: 5,922,000,000

Now that’s what I call People Power!

The Question

Is there a viable way to actually harness the power of these web searches inside Google, Yahoo, and Bing, to create some type of renewable energy to power the Grid? What do you think?

The Solution

The search engine drives more web traffic than road traffic in all major U.S. cities combined, as there were 254.4 million registered passenger vehicles in the United States as of 2007.

  1. It’s always on.
  2. Not dependent on weather or geographic location.
  3. And its CHEAP.

The Execution

This is where I’m stumped. The idea is great. But how do you execute it? You would have to some how secure partnerships with utility companies, and drive that energy that you create from your searches, directly to them, so that it can be transferred to you and the monetary credit will be reflected in your monthly power bill. Or maybe you could generate renewable energy via your searches, and keep the power at home. Don’t envolve the power company or the grid. Just as some people already do with their own wind mills or solar panels. Again, I’m not sure about the execution. But if it could work, it would be AMAZING! Just need some brilliant Web Programmers and Electrical Engineers on the job.

Let’s redefine the standard in renewable energy, not by inventing something totally new, but by leveraging the power of something we already use every day.

Your thoughts?
