“We are” violating his rights, said Mirkarimi. “We potentially are.” He seemed almost relieved that anyone might think he’d actually been tough on Lopez-Sanchez.

Still, after confirming his federal time was done, the sheriff’s department let Lopez-Sanchez walk on April 15.

Then along came the gun.

On June 27, a Bureau of Land Management ranger left a gun in his car while on business in the city. Any San Franciscan knows not to leave a bag of Fritos in your car if you don’t want to return to a broken window. So, the inevitable happened: A thief broke in and stole the gun. The ranger filed a police report.
