Diesel Quality and ULSD Availability in Honduras — A Field Report

The current situation with ULSD in Honduras

As of August 2023, there is no ULSD in Honduras. It appears that Uno initially introduced ULSD back in 2017 [1] [2] [3] but somehow it is no longer available.

Currently in Honduras, there is only Low-Sulfur Diesel (LSD) at a maximum of 500 ppm sulfur content. [4]

This is how I concluded that there is no ULSD in Honduras:

I’ve contacted Uno to inquire about ULSD availability to no avail.
They don’t have a website dedicated to Honduras. Their official website does not offer any details about the Diesel products they sell and their sulfur content.
There are no recent press releases mentioning ULSD.
Their recent social posts don’t mention anything about ULSD.
Visited 10+ Uno gas stations in Tegucigalpa and none of them and ULSD or any information about the sulfur content.
I’ve also visited other gas stations that might have ULSD, such as Puma or Shell.

So what are your options?

If you are only for a short time in Honduras, use the neighboring El Salvador or Guatemala as an alternative as both have ULSD at some gas stations.

If you need to fill up, ensure that the Diesel is at least Diesel Bajo en Azufre, which means 500 ppm.

Dreaming about the future

If and when ULSD will be re-introduced to Honduras, it will most likely be from Uno, Puma, or both.

Based on experiences from neighboring countries with these companies, when ULSD is introduced it will most likely be available in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula.
