The Monster Within

What do you do
when deep in your heart
there lives a monster
that watches your every move?

It is just waiting for the chance to attack…

It carefully takes note
of your ups and downs,
your doubt and your pain —
it knows when to strike.

It bides its time…

The monster waits
for that moment
when lights are off
and you are all alone
and your guard is down
and you turn your back on reality
and then
it opens its jaws
and bites down hard.

Will it devour you
or will you manage to,
once again,
fight it off?

How many times have the monster and you
engaged in this dance?
Why won’t it leave you alone?
Could it be, perhaps,
that it doesn’t know
if you go down,
it will go down with you?
