Hearken Story Roundup
Every week, our partner newsrooms use the Hearken framework to publish great stories that were initiated by audience questions. Check back for updates every other Monday for a glimpse at what matters to audiences around the country and the world!

Sometimes you’ll find a few highlighted stories at the top, put together by Hearken’s team of engagement consultants.
March 3–16, 2018
Janine Anderson: The Minneapolis Star Tribune’s Opinion team put together a prompt looking for people’s questions about gun laws in Minnesota, after the Parkland school shooting. They received 1,700 questions and, through a voting round, selected this one to answer in an editorial: How effective was the last assault weapons ban?
And for a fun look at what it’s like at another place doing the same kind of public-powered work you’re doing, check out WESA’s Katie Blackley on The Confluence. Find her around 43 minutes in. She talks about their Hearken series, Good Question, and what it’s like to work on it.
Summer Fields: VPR’s people-powered podcast Brave Little State dug into a question from listener Walter. He asked whether the Northeast Kingdom, a region in Vermont where he grew up, is really as different from the rest of the “liberal, progressive” state as its reputation suggests.
“My question stems from the fact that I’m gay” he said, “and growing up in the Northeast Kingdom wasn’t easy for me. And high school was not an enjoyable experience.”
Not only does VPR try their hardest to answer his question, but host/producer Angela also does a great job of showcasing Walter’s personal stakes. She included his backstory, why he was curious, his hopes for the answer, and his reaction to what they found in the process. We always advocate for that strategy: showing, not telling, how much you value your audience’s input by including your question askers’ voices in your final story.
Julia Haslanger: Good work by reporter Matt Levin, who took the time to dig into the data around a question the CALmatters audience asked and voted for: “Are foreign investors driving up real estate in your California neighborhood?”
Bonus props! Kudos to Nashville Public Radio for celebrating *two full years of question-answering* by saying thanks to their audience and giving updates on some of their most popular stories. It was a smart way to give their archives some new life, remind their audience they can send you questions, and restate why the newsroom is doing this whole thing in the first place.
Stephanie Snyder: As gun law debates have resurfaced in the U.S., similar conversations and questions have also become top-of-mind for those abroad. Swiss Info put out a call for questions related to access to guns and gun control issues in Switzerland, and published an informative roundup of the most frequently-asked questions, including, “Why are there so few mass shootings in Switzerland but so many guns in private hands?”

February 17 — March 2, 2018
Janine Anderson: The Dallas Morning News took on a question submitted by Lily, age 7, who wondered why Texas was so big. Their story tied in with the state’s 182nd birthday, and gave Lily a comprehensive answer to her question about the state’s size, and why Texans are so obsessed with it. Columnist Jacquielynn Floyd’s piece is informative and fun to read, and, filled with delightful — and sometimes, um, “colorful” — language that suits this subject well and likely broadened Lily’s vocabulary.
Summer Fields: “Why aren’t there more positive portrayals of black men in the news?” That’s the question 18-year-old Terrance Robinson, 14-year-old Victor Barnett Jr., 17-year-old Darius Simmons and 16-year-old Ashanti Travers posed to Milwaukee Public Radio (WUWM) through their curious series Bubbler Talk. What followed was a frank conversation between the teens, a Black man who works as a news director at the local ABC affiliate, and folks at WUWM. They turned the mic back on themselves to be accountable and transparent with their community. They all talk about the factors at play and what steps they’re trying to take.
Stephanie Snyder: ABC News in Sydney was prompted to look into a question that many of us have likely wondered at some point (or at least I have!) — “Why is that flag flying at half mast?” Gillian Wood, a local government worker and former librarian, asked Curious Sydney to find out why it was so difficult for the public to learn what or who their government is recognizing on any particular day. Not only was the story well-reported, but Curious Sydney’s Sue Daniel did a great job incorporating Wood throughout the process. 🙌🏼
Julia Haslanger: In the latest story as part of CuriosiD, WDET talked with a woman who asked how much of Michigan’s electricity is still generated by coal — and the reason she wanted to know was because she was considering buying an electric car. So the question CuriosiD tackled was: Could Electric Cars Increase Pollution? It added an element of novelty and freshness (and relatability for some people) to a story that otherwise might have focused on the question of coal vs. not-coal, without a compelling “why should I care?” More proof that talking to your question-asker can help you scope and focus a story.

Janine Anderson: Reckon by AL.com’s Ask Alabama has two homes. One is on the AL.com website, where they put out in-depth answers to what are often very complicated questions. Then, the Reckon by AL.com Facebook page has a playlist of Ask Alabama videos with a very different tone. Check them out.
Summer Fields: WOSU Public Media put Hearken to use with a special series, Chasing the Dream, about issues like jobs, wages, poverty and class. A story published this month that grew out of an audience question, Why Bexley is an affluent island in Columbus, has already become one of the most popular in the series that’s been active since October.
Julia Haslanger: Boise State Public Radio’s Frankie Barnhill did a fantastic job involving the question-asker in the latest Wanna Know Idaho story about statutes of Abraham Lincoln. The audio of this piece showcases how active Ashlie was in getting to the bottom of her question.
