With OpenAI GPTs out for a month now, here is a high-level view of the GPTs found in the wild. These GPTs are sourced from GPT Directories such gptshunter.com and gptdirectory.cc/.
Notable Numbers
- 18K GPTs were discovered in total. Only 6K (33%) have files inside, 850 (4.5%) have custom functionality.
- 10K unique creators were found. 30% are startups with websites.
Takeaways
We are still in the early days of custom GPTs. Currently, most people creating GPTs use it as a form of prompt template. A minority of people have GPTs with files inside, creating simple RAG chatbots.
Very few people are building GPTs with custom functionality. Compared with the existing ChatGPT plugin ecosystem, we are looking at very similar numbers (900 GPTs with APIs vs. 1K plugins in the plugin store).
Looking at what’s out there today, it seems like most of it so far has been for fun projects. Some of the more serious ones look like it’s intended for personal use - something closer to a spreadsheet, than an application. Very few people/companies are pushing the limits of what is possible here.
Hopefully, when OpenAI releases the GPT store in Q1, we can see more innovative GPTs start to emerge.
Looking at GPTs
18K unique GPTs were found.
- 6K (33%) has files uploaded
- 850 (4.5%) has APIs
- New GPTs discovered are slowing down (skewed by data source)
Looking at GPT Creators
10K unique creators were found.
- The majority (70%) are identified as a business or website.
- 27% of Creators listed more than 1 (Skewed by needing to submit to one of these GPT directories).
Looking at GPTs with Files
5.8K GPTs were discovered with files inside
- A wide distribution of the number of files per GPT
- Most files are between the 1K-100K token range
- 49% of all files are PDFs
Looking at GPTs with custom functionality
Only 900 GPTs were discovered with functions enabled. Keep in mind, we have around 1K ChatGPT plugins (which needed to go through review).
- 70% have no security
- Most of these GPTs are very simple. Only < 100 GPTs have more than 3 APIs supported.
