Nothing beats stepping into someone else’s shoes for a bit of role-playing action—and in VR, you can get closer to that action than ever before. The sense of agency you have over your character and their journey is unmatched. Learning new skills, upgrading abilities, looting more stuff, or enjoying a great story. That’s what we love about RPGs!

So, whether you like to step into a new character, or guide one along their journey, exploring perks and upgrades, this is the list for you!

Grimlord

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: if you’re looking for something like Dark Souls in VR, Grimlord is it. It’s brutal and challenging, but extremely satisfying and pretty visceral. Like every great Souls-like, the combat can be tailored to your style, with plenty of weapon options to choose from. The maps also loop and inter-connect, helping you return to previous areas to demonstrate your newfound power and annihilate foes that previously gave you trouble.

Also, the bosses are tough… As you’d expect, honestly.

If action-packed dark fantasy (and dying) is your jam, it’s time to get Grimlord.

Demeo

Paying homage to classic tabletop RPGs like DnD, Demeo is an awesome adventure that serves as the perfect introduction to RPGs, DnD, and VR in one neat package—that’s packed with quests, characters, and things to do!

While it’s not quite as complex as classic DnD, Demeo still has great depth to its systems, allowing you to build your character and party however you choose before taking them out on one of 5 expansive main questlines. For hobby fans, there’s also a very cute miniature painting minigame, meanwhile, for multiplayer fans, it’s the perfect way to gather the gang and set off for some tabletop VR questing. Demeo essentially captures that addictive spirit of tabletop RPG fun—and we love it!

Arcaxer & Arcaxer 2

Arcaxer is a turn-based RPG blending a 3rd-person god view of the overworld with elements of 1st-person, turn-based combat. What results is a unique blend of mechanics in a sprawling dungeon-crawling adventure where you’ll take on new quests, find plenty of loot, upgrade your character, and take on a whole bunch of enemies.

Arcaxer has been a smash hit since it hit SideQuest back in 2020—and now, they’ve released the early access demo for a sequel: Arcaxer 2. If you love turn-based RPGs, these are awesome picks—and if you love the first game, you should definitely try the sequel to see what’s changed!

Ancient Dungeon

Ancient Dungeon is one of SideQuest’s original success stories—launching with us as a sideload-only game before amazing players with it unique charm, gameplay, and style. Now, it’s a Meta Store hit with rave reviews—and it’s easy to see why once you dive in.

It’s a rogue-like dungeon crawler with tons of weapons, skills, treasures, and foes to find within the cavernous depths. The gameplay is smooth and satisfying, but there’s plenty of challenge on offer here, too. Don’t let the Minecraft-like graphics fool you—these enemies mean business! Can you plunder the Ancient Dungeon and make it back alive?

Chaos Magus

If mystical mayhem is more your speed, then Chaos Magus is the RPG rogue-lite for you. While you can hack and slash with a sword in Chaos Magus, the focus here is the magic system—and it’s incredibly deep, granting you access to more than 200 unique spells to experiment with.

And you’ll need that massive arsenal of magical tools because the combat is fast and furious, with 100 different enemy types to battle and blast. Combos are key, and you’ll have to be careful to match the correct magical element to the enemy type, or you’ll just end up healing them. This makes for a spell-slinging experience that keeps you on your toes!

Dungeons of Eternity

With near-perfect critic reviews, Dungeons of Eternity is a co-op-focused fantasy dungeon crawler that’s seriously polished, endlessly playable, and tons of fun.

Every dungeon is procedural, so you’ll never play the same run twice—and while the action is incredible in single-player, giving you access to classes, weapons, spells, tools, and more to experiment with, where Dungeons really shines is its 3-player co-op. There are secrets to uncover, enemies to defeat, and powerful bosses to annihilate—however you choose! And, when you’re done, you can power up back at base before heading into the Dungeons again. This is a must-play if you’re an RPG fan (and you’re reading this, so I’m assuming you are!).

Battle Talent

We really are spoiled for choice when it comes to fantasy rogue-lites, and Battle Talent is one of the absolute best of the bunch. Releasing on SideQuest in 2020 then smashing through to Meta’s Official Store in 2023, Battle Talent is extremely polished, endlessly varied, fantasy fighting fun—with updates from the dev team coming thick and fast all the time.

You’re free to craft your character however you choose, then embark on a vast range of challenges designed to test your mettle. The weapon options are enormous—with well over 100 to get to grips with and try out, including swords, axes, bows, daggers, and more! The enemies, too, are varied and challenging—especially the bosses. If you’re after a story-driven experience, this might not be for you. But if you want some of the best fantasy combat in VR, this is one for the wishlist.

Drakheir

We covered Drakheir in our Indie VR Spotlight at the end of 2023, and it’s made amazing progress since then! This story-driven experience is centered around hand-tracking-based spellcasting—and you’ll need to master a wide range of spells to defeat the waves of enemies that come your way. Casting through hand-tracking is excellent, making you feel connected to every cast, and helping you better step into your wizarding role.

The dev team has released a slew of updates since we last covered it, ironing out some bugs, improving the movement mechanics, and improving the hand-tracking even further. It’s also free to play! We can’t wait to see what they come up with next.

Axegend

Inspired by the super popular Orcs Must Die, Axegend is a classic rogue-lite throwing you into the role of the dashing knight, tasking you to kill the orcs, save the princess, and make it back alive!

Starting with nothing but your trusty axe, you’ll gradually unlock a much wider range of tools and weapons to master and bring to battle against waves of deadly foes. And hacking them to bits is endlessly fun—plenty of blood and gore on offer here! The gameplay style is best described as tower defense on the run—and you’ll need a solid strategy as well as a strong sword arm (or axe arm) to come out on top.
