TRENDING HASHTAGS — #M19 #STANDUPTORACISM #REFUGEESWELCOME

BRIEF

Britain is split today. It’s split on whether to welcome refugees or not. Whether to stay in the European Union or leave. Britain is facing a sharp rise in racist attacks against Muslims and what will happen in the next few years will shape the face of Britain for generations.

This week, a small number of far-right members faced large numbers of anti-fascist activists. The campaign was organised by Stand Up To Racism movement.

What’s Happening?

“Our government is introducing laws to snoop on lives of innocent citizens”- said Sarah who was at the demonstration “They [government] is trying to put the blame on refugees and Muslims. And by that they try to justify increased surveillance.”

“We are here to tell that everybody is a human. By not letting refugees in — you are decreasing our security than increasing.” — says Tom.

Many other demonstrators raise concerns of the rise of far-right groups such as Britain First. “They take different names, get different leaders or change their logos, but they all promote same ideas of hatred and Islamophobia.”

What People at Protests Say?

“Just imagine it is you” — said Lauren — “Imagine you are forced to join war, but you reject it by all your heart. Imagine you have a family to save and you escape a war-zone and come to Europe that calls itself civilized and you have to fight again.”

What Can Happen?

After terror attacks killed 130 people in Paris, there was a spike of racist attacks on Muslims and mosques in Britain. The Conservative-led government started to introduce new laws to expand the snooping rights of security services.

Today there are no mass far-right movements in Britain as they are in Germany or Hungary, but some feel that the government is administrating fear by introducing anti-terror measures that scapegoat British Muslim community.

This post wouldn’t be possible without of help of great ‘Instagrammers’ who agreed to share their photos to make this post.
