The 6th Annual Buffer Festival kicked off in Toronto on September 27th. The four-day festival brought together directors, producers, actors, basically anyone involved in the creation of actual video content, to discuss the past, present and future of the online video industry.

Festival attendees also had the opportunity to learn how blockchain technology can revolutionize the creative industry in PopChest founder & CEO Valerian Bennett’s workshop entitled “Blockchain for Creator & Financial Freedom”.

The Creators’ Dilemma

It was an inspirational weekend, especially meeting with creators of all walks, hearing their perspectives as well as their challenges and fears.

As we met with them, three themes kept being voiced, over and over again:

Content creators are universally frustrated by their inability to “cut through” and find an audience for their videos.

The black-box algorithms of Facebook and YouTube, are capricious and just when you think you understand how they work, they change and you’re back to square one. There is no transparency in the process. Even when you’ve amassed a huge number of followers, it’s never guaranteed that they’ll be shown your latest video — unless the almighty algorithm deems it so.

Revenues have fallen precipitously.

It’s nearly impossible for a creator outside of the top 1% of content creators to make enough money to pay their production costs and still have enough money to live on. For instance, Google takes 45% of a creator’s revenues right off the top. 45%! To add, insult to injury it’s not like a creator can instantly cash out when they need the money, you know, say, to pay rent. Instead, they have to wait for Google’s billing cycle.

Other platforms institute draconian content policies.

If you don’t conform to those policies, you’re sh*t out of luck. No soup for you! Your videos are deemed non-monetizable and suffer from economic censorship.

Surely there’s a world where content creators can make a living creating amazing videos, and viewers can watch a range of different types of content!

A New Solution for Video Creators

PopChest’s founder and fellow creative, Valerian Bennett, is a film and television producer and director. He saw these worrying trends emerging and that was the genesis of The POP Network, the open-source, decentralized online video platform that powers PopChest. It’s a network for creators by creators.

As Valerian showcased in his presentation at Buffer Festival, The POP Network uses cryptocurrency (The POP Token) and decentralization technologies to put the power back into the hands of creators everywhere.

On The POP Network, videos aren’t censored, there are zero ads, and creators are paid in real-time. Finally, the world will have a credible video network challenger to the existing (tired) behemoths.

To Infinity and Beyond

If you’re a video creator that’s fed up with the status quo. If you’re done with the demonetization of your space and frustrated by not being able to make the type of content YOU want to make. Please, join our little revolution.

Oh, and if you’re ever in Toronto you should definitely try ax throwing.
