Genuine regret, like depression and insomnia, is something you’ll understand only when you experience it.

A dense adamantium ball’s chained to your heart and a sharp tug reminds you of the burden now and then — and the more you ruminate, the heavier the ball gets.

“Of all the words of mice and men, the saddest are, “It might have been.” — Kurt Vonnegut

While small regrets are livable, the heavy ones cast a depressing net on the world and embitter you—only when you heal them is the world rewashed with vibrant color.

One such regret was my first relationship — starting off as an innocent middle-school love, it ended as a dominant-submissive pool of toxicity.

No dates. No emotional intimacy. No elements of romance. Just whimsical bursts of sexual passion powered by fake promises and words — being incredibly clingy, submissive, and a “One-man” girl, she rode along.

As high school ended, bored and sated, I called it quits. In mental tatters, she sought solace in cutting herself — even getting hospitalized once.

Being young, vain, and part of a poisonous bunch of “friends”, I saw nothing wrong with what I did…
