Why Not Me?

The invitation to be featured on Comatose was a happy shock — I was thrilled and terrified all at once.

My first reaction, a frightening stew of ‘why me?’ and ‘humankind must be shielded forever from the sound of my recorded voice’, slowly settled into a more palatable ‘why not me?’ and ‘it’s just a voice, right?’. I excitedly, and fearfully, dove in.

Pondering the interview, playing with my answers — that was the easy part.

The recording happened, however, during the run-up to and smack in the middle of Thanksgiving week. Of course it did. The house was full of animated people making noise, or sleeping people requiring silence, no one was working (or leaving!), food and drink was flying — in other words, not the best environment for a nervous maiden recording. Bourbon helped (hope that’s not obvious). Dancing between the comings and goings, however brief, helped. Most of all, just deciding that I would make a fool of myself in front of everyone I love, again — and again — that was the ticket.

I never imagined that being a writer would require me to perform in any way.

It’s one of my favorite things about writing — it’s in my head until it comes out my fingers, and it doesn’t matter what I wear or how I sound. I have to thank the wonderful people at Comatose (looking at you, John) for gently pushing me out of my comfort zone and giving me a new way to look at this thing that I’m trying to do. It was an honor — a chaotic, bourbon soaked, Thanksgiving honor.
