Demystifying depression and suicides

Then, one morning while making coffee and scrolling through news online I came across “Chester Bennington committed suicide.” I could not understand for 5 minutes what I was looking at. I had to open different windows to be sure that what I read was not fake. Sadly, it was true.

Like many others, I started listening to pop music in my teens. Slowly and steadily I was inclined to Rock, that is when I came across Linkin Park. I still remember how my friends used to talk about it. Linkin Park is awesome, and it blows your mind, and yes it actually did. It was really interesting how he would see through your “Messed up self” and put it in words and your reaction would be “I feel exactly like that!”. It was brilliant the way his songs helped in emotional upliftment. For many, Linkin Park was this one band that can see through their dark emotions and transform them into a beautiful song. Someone so famous, so loved by all. They had everything, money, love, fans and each other. The whole world wanted them so bad. So perfect. But no one saw what was coming, the price Chester Bennington had paid to be who he was. There must be a lot hidden behind that glamour, because people do not give up on their life all in a few minutes.

This incident made me think — it does not matter what others say or feel for you. If you do not feel or see the worth in yourself, it will never mean anything.

We look at others and feel “Iski life achi hai, koi problem nahi. Lucky”. Then we look at our life and feel even more depressed, worthless or self-pity. We try and struggle to become who they are, to get what they have. In the process, we mostly learn how to lie, how to cheat, how to hurt and how to bring others down so we automatically feel superior. If not this, then many people get introduced to a feeling that constantly reminds them that they are a failure, they are worthless and how nobody wants them.

We all are aware of this side, as this is something almost everyone has been through. After all, we see the world the way we feel, we understand and interpret the way we want it to be. Then, I at times think what about the other side? What are the thoughts of the person whom other people look up to. How does it feel to have it all? To be idealized by several. Always surrounded by people and never be lonely. How does it feel?

The truth is — If you do not love yourself then no one else can fill that space for you. It’s the same situation when you love someone and they leave, no one can fill that space. Chester Bennington, Kurt Cobain, Marilyn Monroe, Jiah Khan many more have decided to end their life because of their own reasons. Celebrities like, Chester, Kurt, Marilyn and few more had similar life conditions. They had troubled childhood and abuse leading to drugs. This hole was never healed. At one point it became so prominent that it became the part of them. Their cries for help could still be heard when they used to perform. It was their pain that sometimes led to the perfect performance. They did struggle and achieve their goal. Only thing that pushed them to the limit was this emptiness, this feeling of nothingness, never allowing anyone to see what they are in reality. Some had issues in relationships, had insecurities, while, some were taken away by their psychological disorders, like Parveen Bobby.

While we see them so perfect, beautiful, talented and most wanted they have everything we could only dream of, but then what happened? Only thing was they did not see this for themselves, and it did not matter if we wrote or screamed out aloud, telling them how great they were and how much we loved them.

How many hits will it take? How many times will you struggle and hurt yourself? How many times will you drown? Before you realize how important you are and beautiful you actually are. Life at times does not roll the way we want but that does not mean that we are failures. In fact, it is the time when you need yourself the most. Fall in love with the most beautiful and trustworthy person in your life that is your own “SELF”.

There are many times when you have done something to be proud, big or small. There are times when you have cared for others, loved and provided comfort, because you are emotional, you have a heart that feels and does good to others. There are set of skills that you possess, that are unique. Close your eyes for a minute and think of all the people to whom you mean the world.

And you will find all the reasons to fall in love with yourself! Try, just once.
