I interviewed with Retool in 2022. I enjoyed the interview process and thought they put more effort into their interview questions than the typical big tech companies.

What does Retool do?

Have you ever had to build an internal dashboard or admin tool? If you’ve build multiple of these, you start to see some commonalities:, e.g. tables and graphs to display and filter data, buttons to take actions on that data, and connections to multiple sources of data.

Wouldn’t it be great if, instead of having to write custom code for every new dashboard, you could just drag and drop from a library of dashboard elements that integrate with your various data sources, allowing your operations teams to move faster?

For example,

  • Send an automated Slack message to our risk team when the percentage of declined transactions goes above X%
  • Review problematic transactions, issue refunds via Stripe, and also let the user know via a confirmation email
  • Manage promo codes, inventory, and more.

Retool is a series C (technically C-2) backed by top-tier investors, including Sequoia, Patrick and John Collison (founders of Stripe), and Elad Gil (investor in Airbnb, Pinterest, Square, Stripe, and more).

The Process

I applied directly online and a recruiter reached out a few days later.

The interview process was fairly standard but they gave me more practical questions than Leetcode ones. I went through the following steps:

  • Recruiter screen
  • Technical phone screen
  • Onsite
  • Offer
