Films of 2020–2021

Back on my old blog, since at least my sophmore year of high school, I did film reviews, of both current and occasionally older movies. I stopped eventually, partially out of mental health related fatigue, partially because I found my style of review (intro, synopses, good stuff, bad stuff, summation) just couldn’t stack up to better reviewers. Also, my interest area in general went into comics, so I started investing more in that. Since my senior year, I did year end lists, which I continued up until 2019.

At first, I thought that perhaps the combination of the aforementioned fatigue and the fact theaters were closed in 2020 due to the pandemic might’ve finally killed off my year end lists the same as my film reviews. However, after returning to theaters and getting to experience movies again on the big screen, I found a renewed sense of enthusiasm, at least for watching movies and comparing them. So, while it might take a bit longer for me to do proper film reviews again, I have decided to start up this tradition again. I feel these lists are a sort of time capsule, a look into the year in movies. Even if I don’t review them properly, it’s nice to just put out my thoughts for posterity. Confirm what a movie was like to watch when it came.

Given I missed last year (along with the rest of the world), I figure I might as well knock out both years in one list. Because why not?

This list is late, but given how the year warped and distorted our understanding of time, again, why not.

If you don’t know, or have forgotten, I don’t do the standard “Good” and “Bad” lists. I do sort of an extremes list. I start off with the worst movie, then rank every movie I’ve seen on a spectrum, finishing off with the best movie. (If you’re confused, it might be better to demonstrate). Because I’m doing two years, the worst and best films are split into 2020 and 2021 films, because I feel that I need to acknowledge the best of both years.

If a movie isn’t on here, I just flat out didn’t see it between January 1st, 2020 and January 3rd, 2022

All that out of the way, let’s start with another feature I added in 2019, for notable (Good or bad) tv shows that should be at least acknowledged, given TV and film are becoming increasingly intertwined with the rise of streaming. These aren’t all the TV shows I saw, just ones I felt were interesting enough to at least discuss:
