People over process

It is tempting to reverse this
To force processes on people
We’re convinced it will solve their problems
But they aren’t
And convincing them seems impossible
So we turn them into the problem
We nurse hopes they will leave
We are tempted to give up on any improvements
Good processes are crucial
They can make teams awesome
They can make our customers awesome
But forcing process rarely creates lasting change
As a facilitator, you are a midwife to the team
They will give birth to their process
You are there to serve them
Advise them of pitfalls and risks
Call out what you see
But it is their process
If the team can’t see the pain points
How might you visualise it?
If the team isn’t ready for your suggestion
What next step are they willing to take?
If they are put off by the size of a change
How might you shrink the change?
You will need to make several attempts
You will fail but get back up
Keep experimenting
Remember you can only build a better process together
