XXIII (Season 24, Episode 2, Aired October 7th, 2012)
Alright, we’re going retro with this, with a reference to the December 21st Mayan apocalypse reference, because this aired two months before the world was going to end. It’s been 9 years, and I’m still waiting for that shit. I’d be remiss if I didn’t include this wonderful video on the topic by the excellent Quinton Reviews:
Anyways, good funny opening, with some nice references to Mayan culture (especially with the designs) and some good jokes riffing on the end of civilization. I like the Mayan gods returning, again, good designs, and the jokes mostly work. Even some of the more modern references (like the apocalypse being “Obama’s fault”) actually sort of worked when they shouldn’t have. It actually works a lot better in execution than concept.
“The Greatest Story Ever Holed” is an original story, though centered around the concept of a black hole sucking up the residents of Springfield. I’m partial to this concept (I enjoy black holes as a scientific concept), and I like the execution of it here. I like the way the absorption is animated, showing the strength of computer animation int his regard. I like that the main conflict is that the black hole gets bigger when you throw more junk into…
