600th episode! Jesus H. Christ, 600!
Surprisingly, no election based opening for this, given what was happening at the time. There’s a slight joke about Ivanka becoming president in 2028, but that’s the only thing that relates to the election. I liked the reference to Christmas shopping on Halloween (because I’m partial to anything that deals with Christmas shopping too early. Massive pet peeve of mine.) Anyway, the opening has Sideshow Bob again, along with Kang, the recurring Leprachaun character, and the ghost of Frank Grimes (from one of the series highlights, Season 8’s “Homer’s Enemy”. I wonder if Bob decided not to bring up that time he sent Grimes’ son to jail.) It’s weird segment, because it brings up Frank Grimes, but some things are weird, but not necessarily inaccurate (like Bob saying all of them are “genius intellects” that lost every battle to Homer Simpson, but Bob’s enemy is actually Bart, and Kang doesn’t speak at all for some reason). Anyway, I like that Homer doesn’t even remember that Frank Grimes died (like in the episode I linked), a bit of nice nod to the whole theme of that episode. The episode ends with Maggie as Alex from A Clockwork Orange (can they not come up with a different joke for her? This is the third time they’ve done this), and Grimes watching helplessly as clips of episodes from prior seasons play, joking “In Hell, They make you watch them all in a row.”, which really sums up the longevity of the Simpsons in more than one way.
