The 2016 election — and obviously for a number of other reasons as well — will always stand out in my memory as not only the first election in which I was able to vote for a Presidential candidate, but the one during which I realized that here in the United States, my political views and principles don’t have much of a home within our major political parties.

Of course, I will never forget the night that Donald Trump was elected. It was my senior year of college, and my roommates had gone to bed hours before. I was alone in the living room, watching the results roll in on CNN with my phone in my hand, feeling my heart sink further and further in to the pit of my stomach with each passing hour until suddenly it was 3:30 in the morning and all the pundits were trying to grapple with the fact that Donald Trump was the new President elect. Before I forced myself to go upstairs and ultimately lie awake until 7:30 in the morning, I forced myself to acknowledge everything that I was feeling. Like countless others did, I shed some tears. Tears, of course, that came not only from sadness and fear, but raw anger as well.
