Tekashi 6ix9ine (Daniel Hernandez) and Trippie Redd ( Michael Lamar White IV)

On the 9th of May 2018, two of rising stars in the clout rap genre took to Instagram live to air out each of their grievances about each other. This naturally devolved into a comical shouting match, which inevitably was parodied by the talented comedian Blake Webber.

Jokes aside, the live streaming argument proved an important point about clout rap. More than any other genre it has masterfully exploited the power of social media to its benefits.

The live streaming between these two stars drew in at its peak over 180,000 live viewers!!!

For a live streaming that was not advertised beforehand, and was spontaneous, to drew in that many people to view a screaming match between two men is quite an achievement.

To put these number into persepective, the 11pm E! News show did on the same day did 243,000 and the talented duo of “Desus & Mero” on Viceland did 113,000. Both of these shows have marketing budgets supporting them.

It is possible this is a anomaly because, it takes alot of factors and luck to create a rap beef this geniuine that could create this level of tension and energy to attract such a large audience.

What it showed though, was that clout rap is better at getting attention than other genres. In particular its special because it exploits social media platforms, to generate entertaining content , that grabs our attention , thereby becoming important in the mind of the audience. Because we remember what we focus our attention on, and because this rap beef is worth of our attention the audience will not be forgetting this for a long time.
