Write it all down

I’ve already written about common patterns of various techniques which are based on the “start with facts” idea. Another, similar one, is based on the idea of getting it all out of your head (before you really start doing anything about it).

Numerous techniques are using this approach to start your engines.

Take GTD (Getting Things Done) for example. When starting, it is essential that you capture (i.e. write down) every project and task you are currently involved in. Only then you can start organizing them.

Similarly, when you introduce kanban to a team the first thing after the board is prepared is to create a card representing every task each team member is occupied with. Only when you see it, you can start to analyze and (hopefully) improve the flow of work.

Setting life goals also often begin this way. Some popular methods urge you to start with writing down everything you would like to accomplish in your life. And then they urge you to narrow the deadline, to a decade, a year, and then only months, so that you are forced to dismiss all that is not essential and discover your most important goals in the process. But these are the next steps. It all begins with pouring every idea from your head onto a piece of paper.

…whatever new venture you plan to start today, begin with writing it all down. :)
