‘If I Were a Horse’ Suzanne Vellema, solo exhibition, Galerie Noord, the Netherlands
Suzanne Vellema is an equine artist whose passion for horses emanates through her work. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Minerva Academy in Groningen where she met Frieda De Witte, a friend who later wrote a poem entitled ‘If I were a horse’ for her. Vellema’s solo exhibition, ‘Als ik een paard was’, held at Galerie Noord in Groningen, was curated by De Witte herself.
Currently residing in Brabant, in a forested area abundant with horses, Vellema joined the Paard Verzameld Collective in 2018. The collective brings together equine artists from different parts of the world for collaboration, support, and connection. Vellema’s work is bound to her love for horses. She experiments with photography and video forms in her attempt to capture the powerful bond and beneficial synergy that can exist between horses and humans.
Using abstract forms that incorporate textiles, metal, and horsehair, Vellema depicts the essence of the horse’s movements, colours, and textures. For her, as an artist, horses are an endless source of inspiration and creativity.
The exhibition is on from 01/07 till 27/07 2023 at Galerie Noord, Groningen, the Netherlands.
