For Dutch artist Brigitte Drexhage (b. 1964) accidental paint splashes are part of her creative process. The randomness of the splatters are the backbone of her art and give it it’s own distinctive style. Every single background of each individual painting is as important as the final finished portrait. Only when the background is completely to her satisfaction, the painting of the actual subject takes place.

“I love the paint sweeps and strokes that make up the structure of a painting” — Brigitte Drexhage

After deciding on the composition, the canvas is painted with a mixture of alcohol and acrylics which is applied with the use of a plantspray bottle. This makes the paint run and causes it to drip, creating an unplanned pattern. Parts of the portrait are left unfinished so that the beautiful background textures shine through.

Brigitte gets inspired by her own beautiful Andalusian gelding and artists like Marli Hommel and Elise Genest, who are both known for their use of movement and flow in their art.
