PAULINE ZEIJ
Artist & Collective member, the Netherlands

Can you please introduce yourself?
Pauline:
‘Hello, my name is Pauline Zeij and I’m from a small town near Amsterdam in the Netherlands’.

Can you please enlighten us about your art? Which medium do you use and what inspires your creative process?
Pauline:
‘My inspiration comes from the animals and nature around me, as well as childhood stories and memories. I use a variety of media, but mostly watercolours, ink, and pencils’.

What sparked your interest in art, and how have you seen yourself grow since then?
Pauline:
‘As a child, I was always making sketches and drawings, and I wrote stories with illustrations. I had a lot of imagination, but it felt so easy and normal that I never realised that it was a special gift. It wasn’t until someone said to me: wake up, that’s talent, nurture it!’.

Is there a particular experience or event that has significantly impacted your artistic journey? If so, could you share it with us?
Pauline:
‘The turning point for me was when my work was exhibited by a gallery for the first time. It was a big step for me, and my art was later bought by a museum, which was really amazing! However, being part of the Paard Verzameld Collective made a lot more things possible. The support and advice of Joyce, the visionary behind the collective, allowed me to evolve and grow as an artist’.

How did you come across Paard Verzameld Collective, and what motivated you to apply for membership? Additionally, when did you join the collective?
Pauline:
‘The collective reached out to me on Instagram years ago, and a little while before that, I was noticed on the Paard Verzameld Facebook/website by a colleague member of the collective called Mirelle Vegers. So, I was extra thrilled to receive the message from Joyce to join. I became a member when the collective was still in its infancy, as one of the first members, seven years ago’.

In what ways has being a member of Paard Verzameld Collective enriched your connection with fellow artists and led to opportunities or collaborations for you as an artist?
Pauline:
‘Being a part of the collective has been a game-changer for me. The meetings and inspiration days allow us to learn and support one another. Together, we are so much stronger than as single artists. We began small with almost no experience, and now we’ve grown so much, participating in beautiful events like the annual collective exhibition at De Paardenkamp and the Dutch Equine Art Fair in Amsterdam, thanks to Joyce’s leadership’.

Can you describe any valuable skills or learning experiences that you’ve gained through your involvement in Paard Verzameld Collective?
Pauline: ‘
Through my involvement in the Paard Verzameld Collective, I have gained significant learning experiences and developed valuable skills. One of the most important lessons I have learned is to believe in myself and have confidence in what I create. This mindset has allowed me to take more risks and be courageous with my artistic endeavours. I have also learned the importance of not waiting for inspiration to strike, but rather to actively sketch, observe, and practice consistently.

Additionally, being part of this collective has given me the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with other artists, which has significantly enhanced my growth and development.’
