KAREN OSBORN
Artist & Collective member, Australia

Can you please introduce yourself?
Karen:
I live in Queensland,Australia, on a small acreage with my herd, greyhound, and assorted poultry. My studio looks out over the paddocks and so my inspiration is literally in my backyard with my horses often popping their head over the fence in search of interaction and perhaps a carrot . There is nothing quite like waking up to the sight of the waiting horses everyday, and moonlight visits in the paddock. I like to trail ride and 2 years ago participated in an epic cattle drive over a week in the outback, taking my beloved mare .

I also love to teach art and have a regular weekly group of inspiring artists as well as private students to my home studio.

Can you please enlighten us about your art? Which medium do you use and what inspires your creative process?
Karen:
I am primarily fascinated by the otherworldly medium of soft pastels, captivated by their delicate hues and textures. Although I am equally proficient in oils, I have discovered that my skill in pastel painting greatly enhances my abilities when working with oils, and vice versa.

What sparked your interest in art, and how have you seen yourself grow since then?
Karen:
Since childhood, I’ve been drawing and learned oil painting from my father at 15. I have a passion for continual learning and exploring the art world, from the old masters to contemporary artists. Art is an integral part of my being, igniting my imagination and providing purpose. It brings me immense joy to create and express myself through various mediums.

Is there a particular experience or event that has significantly impacted your artistic journey? If so, could you share it with us?
Karen:
Encountering Michelangelo’s David in Florence was a deeply emotional experience that moved me to tears. Additionally, I vividly remember being captivated by the “Love and Death” exhibition, showcasing art from the Victorian era, during its tour in Australia. Frederic Leighton’s works, in particular, had a profound impact on me, reshaping my understanding of how art can resonate with viewers.

Seven years ago, I reconnected with horses and adopted Valentino, an ex racehorse. Now, I have a small herd of 7 that I live with, and my passion for equine art was re-ignited. I have endless inspiration from my horses.

How did you come across Paard Verzameld Collective, and what motivated you to apply for membership? Additionally, when did you join the collective?
Karen:
I came across Paard Verzameld via Social Media. I was thrilled to apply for membership to the collective and even more so to be approved. I’m very proud of my association with Paard Verzameld. To me, being a member is as good as winning a major award. It’s a recognition of accomplishment. I think I’ve been a member for four years now.

In what ways has being a member of Paard Verzameld Collective enriched your connection with fellow artists and led to opportunities or collaborations for you as an artist?
Karen:
I have formed some wonderful peer-based friendships within the collective. There have been many opportunities, including magazine cover competitions, being a guest artist in Bit cap magazine, and being selected for the international exhibition Fiera Cavelli in Verona.

I’ve also had the great honour of partnering with Paard Verzameld to provide a series of Masterclasses within the Collective.

Can you describe any valuable skills or learning experiences that you’ve gained through your involvement in Paard Verzameld Collective?
Karen:
I’ve loved attending masterclasses, and thoroughly enjoy the in-house exchange of ideas and information.

The monthly challenges have absolutely increased my skills. Joyce always designs the challenges to push one out of one’s normal practice and ways of working. Like a life drawing group, some of the results I’m still in love with and can’t quite believe I produced in the time frame, others were perhaps not exhibition-worthy, yet I can clearly see my own growth from participating. And it’s a huge privilege to see the works of the other artists who participate and witness the creativity stemming from the same prompt I worked from.

I’ve also received Creative Coaching several times from Joyce, which has been very instrumental in my development. Joyce has a unique perspective on the art equine world, and her ideas are authentic and original.

A big thank you to Karen Osborn for her valuable time and effort in participating in this inspiring interview series.
