Scottish artist Ian Calder (b. 1942) is mostly a self-taught artist although he did join the Glasgow School of Art for art classes in his late teens. Nowadays he lives and works in Ireland. Ian works both from life drawings and photographs he takes himself. Being a keen horseman he draws from experience of years of handling, riding and working with horses.

“In my horse studies I try to achieve an anatomically correct impression of the horse through a technique of very loose brush work, and hopefully convey something of the power and beauty of the horse. I often like to pose the horse formally as one would to appraise the horse’s conformation”. — Ian Calder

Ian Calder feels a connection with painters as Joan Eardley, particularly known for her portraits of Scottish street children and landscapes, Basil Blackshaw and Austrian artist Egon Scheile. These expressionists are a constant source of inspiration. Also classic equine masters like George Stubbs, Joseph Crawhall, Alfred Munnings, known for their more formal approach to equine portaiture.
