Inspiration day meetup with the Paard Verzameld Collective

‘Observational art is defined as drawing or painting from life. Sketching a still life, drawing from a life model or drawing a landscape. The image is not taken from either a photograph or the artist’ imagination, but from real life observation.’

Why is being able to draw from observing important for an (equine) artist? Well, to name a few benefits: it helps you to make compositional choices, accurately depict anatomy and grasp the importance of light and shadow in your work. More than enough reasons to organize a meetup!

Never mind a few drops of rain, this Collective doesn’t stop for anything! After a quick getting to know each other, matching names and faces we started off by writing down our goals and expectations for the day on a sheet of A4. The message of the day was clear : think out of the box and try to get out of your comfort zone.

We split the day into four sketching sessions, starting off indoors (due to a little rain) with three life models who patiently stood posing for a few exercises to loosen up the drawing muscles.

After a well deserved lunch we continued our day outside, where we found six friendly Friesians who happily let us capture their image onto paper using charcoal, pastels and pencils.

We concluded the day with a group overview, discussing our set personal goals. What was the reason for joining this meetup and what did you want to get out of it? And did your expectation meet reality? The vibes were positive and friendly, the quiet no nonsense stable was the perfect environment for everyone to let go and accept, learn and surprise themselves.

“Already looking forward to the next meet-up” — Sjoerd Blokker

Learning the importance of observing, drawing what your eye sees and how to transfer this onto your paper. Great group of talented people! We drew, we learned, listened and laughed! For more information on the Paard Verzameld Collective and more, please go to our collective page.

We just had the most amazing inspirational day together as a group where we drew, we talked, we listened and we laughed.

A big thank you to our art teacher for today, Tineke van der Velde who did an amazing job guiding us through the sketch sessions, to the members of the best equine art collective in the world(!) and to Marianne of Stal Moreau, who made us feel very welcome!

Who of you is coming to our next Paard Verzameld artist meetup?
