Joanna Czubak (b. 1984) studied photography and graphic arts at the Academy of Art in Łódź, Poland, where she specialized in linocuts and drawings. Joanna sketches mostly from nature or uses in some cases old photos as a reference point carefully making her own version. Inspiration comes from books, something particular in the landscape, a certain situation, a picture or a photograph.

“In my work I use many techniques. Drawing, painting especially watercolor, graphic techniques like lino cuts, lithography, batik and glass mosaic. I love all of them! Many things influenced me, sometimes I don’t even realize it”

— Joanna Czubak

Since she grew up in a village where animals were part of everyday life, the main theme of many of her early drawings are mainly animals. Horses being her favorite subject although she has confessed that she always wants to say something else.

As an artist Joanna is not interested in hyper realistic images and feels that we have photographs to fulfill that need. She looks for the deeper, mysterious layers in art, that ‘something’ hidden underneath the initial surface.

“I like art which is a little bizarre’ — Joanna Czubak

The first avant-garde movements of early twentieth century, particularly Fauvism and (German) Expressionism have been important influences in her art. Artist like Egon Schiele, Toulouse- Lautrec, Honore Daumier, Hopper and Van Gogh have made a lasting impression on her use of colour and technique.

Joanna’s ‘Coalminers’ linos are reminiscent of the work by German Expressionistic sculptor and graphic artist Käthe Kollwitz (b. 1867- d. 1945). Dramatic monochrome statements, without the distraction of bold colours. The power of art in a single colour.
