Susan Leyland’s touching tribute to the war horses, donkeys and mules of WWI has come to completion and is being unveiled June 8th in Ascot. The project has been four years in the making. From submitting the designs for “Poppy” as she is affectionately known, to being transported from Scotland where she was cast, to being installed on her plinth in Ascot awaiting her unveiling.

For Susan it has been a hands on job from day one, capturing so many details from the ammunition box nails in the mud, the tucked up waist, predominant hip and rump bones, little leg and hind quarter muscle to the pouting, cracked lips from harsh bits and dry mouth. The tail the only visible movement, caught in a slight gust of wind. Her ears are back but openend sideways to hear her own thoughts and to think.

The horse is a mare, personifying the suffering of the mothers, sisters and wifes. The giver of life.
