This work from an unknown date called “les Croupes” is a study of a horses backhand by French artist Théodore Géricault (b. 1791 — d. 1824). Although he died young at the age of 32, Géricault is considered one of the pioneers of the “Romantic” movement and an influential painter and lithographer. He spent most of his time at the palace stables of Versailles where he gained knowledge of the anatomy of horses.
