Hello and welcome to the Malayalam course by PACASA Language Academy. In this article we will learn about how to make a sentence into interrogative in Malayalam language.

Interrogative suffix ‘O’ is added to the verb after all other suffixes to make a sentence into interrogative. The negative verbs alla and illa take -ae to form confirmatory questions. Let us examine some sentences to know how to make a sentence into interrogative.

Joshi schoolil pOyi
Joshi went to school

Now let us add -O to the sentence to make it interrogative.

Joshi schoolil pOyO?
Has Joshi gone to school?

Ningal paadum
You will sing

Ningal paadumO?
Will you sing?

Ningal paRayum
You will tell

Ningal paRayumO?
Will you tell?

Ningal varum
You will come

Ningal varumO?
Will you come?

Now let us see how the negative verbs alla and illa take -ae to form confirmatory questions

Joshi schoolil pOyi allae?
So Joshi went to school right?

Ningal paadum allae?
So, you will sing right?

Just for fun, imagine just how the ‘tone’ will change the ‘mood’ of this confirmatory questions! Let us assume that Jobby stole the pencil of Savitha. She called her dad. Jobby was puzzled and came to Savitha and asked.. So, you will tell, right? here the conversation takes place between two kids and they may use the informal term ‘Nee’ instead of ‘Ningal’ for ‘You’.

Nee pappayOd paRayum allae?
So, you will tell your dad, right?

Hereafter, you may recognize some interrogatory sentences whenever you happen to hear Malayalam on TV. You will also understand just how they form confirmatory questions by adding -allae at the end.

Now watch this video clip and the conversation begins as follows..

1- Hello Mr. Alexandar, varanam (Come), irikkanam (Sit)
2- Nee enne ottikkoduthu allae? (So you’ve betrayed me, right?)
