The Bulacan State University (BulSU) Gold Gears imposed a scintillating display of composure and determination in its first tournament this year, ruling the 2nd Quarterly Athletics Competition, held at the Athletics Bowl, Baguio City, February 24–25.

After a successful stint in the National State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) Meet last October 2023, the BulSU Athletics team bannered the university pride yet again as the team bagged 14 medals in the two-day tourney.

Leading the way, Meralyn Martin topped both the women’s 200-meter and 400-meter dash with Pamela Mirandilla following suit as she seized the gold in the women’s 800-meter run.

The two then spearheaded the team to two more medals, winning the gold in the 4x400 mixed relay together with Mark Aldwin Alquino and Marc Joseph Salinas and securing the silver in the women’s 4x400 with Antonette Lucilla and Annarissa Manolos.

“Sobrang saya ng puso ko na nakakuha kami ng mga medalya para sa BulSU. Unexpected talaga dahil this is the first time na sumali kami sa ganitong competition at hindi namin alam kung sino ang mga great competitors sa athletic meet na ito dito sa Baguio,” Martin said in an online interview with the Pacesetter.

Rhealyn Mirandilla also made strides as she finished first in the women’s long jump and the women’s 4x100 relay alongside Martin, Manolos, and Keithleen Morato. Mirandilla ended her Baguio stint with a silver in the women’s high jump.

“Ang naging puhunan lang namin ay sumubok kami at tinapangan namin sa laban,” Martin on the team’s mindset heading into competition.

Gold Gears’ Justin Ysip (women’s 1,500-meter) and Aites Pakinggan (3,000-meter) added two golds in the campus’ medal haul.

Capping it off, Manolos (100-meter), Ysip (800-meter), and Morato (shot put) nabbed silver in their respective events, while Mariane Salvador secured the bronze in the women’s 1,500-meter run.
