According to the Korea Creative Content Agency, the domestic web novel market is expected to reach 600 billion KRW in 2020. This is a 60-fold increase from the 10 billion KRW level in 2013. In addition to the expansion of the web novel market as mentioned above, the sales of the webtoon industry are about 1.538 trillion won in 2020, showing the steepest growth among the contents industry. The rapid growth of the web novel and webtoon market was driven by the use of intellectual property (IP). This is because secondary contents based on various published contents are increasing, and various global OTT platforms including Netflix are looking for excellent IPs.
In line with this atmosphere, the number of contests itself has increased a lot to find IP, which is the raw stone for high-quality content. In particular, in order to find a better IP, the amount of prize money has been greatly increased, and the number of contests in the billions has also increased.
Naver Webtoon held a web novel contest with a total prize money of 1 billion won, which was the highest in Korea for a single web novel contest. The grand prize was 100 million won, and the grand prize was 50 million won, confirming the will to obtain high-quality IP.
In addition, many companies such as Kakao Entertainment’s web novel contest with a total prize of over 500 million won, Jo Ara, and KT Studio held contests with a total prize of over 100 million. In the case of Kakao, the Kakao Page guarantees that the award-winning work will be turned into a webtoon, and gives an opportunity to be serialized not only in Korea but also abroad.
As there is a lot of interest in securing original IPs with potential, there are also contests for the source ‘story’ of which the final form has not been determined.
There was also a contest for the ‘Korea Contents Grand Prize Story Category’ jointly hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Creative Content Agency. It is the largest government award program for writers and creators, and it was received in five fields: performance, cartoon (webtoon), anime, video (drama, film), and publication.
