‘Tis the season of the Elf on the Shelf, the friendly little spy that moves from place to place, while kids sleep. As a parent, thinking of exceptionally creative ideas with elaborate scenarios can be a challenge. But if you play your cards right, you can use the little scout as your healthy habits side-kick!

There’s no shame in treating you child with holiday treats, but incorporating and encouraging healthy habits and behaviors can teach your child that moderation and good behavior will be rewarded handsomely.

The Dentist Elf: Try placing your elf in the bathroom, with a new toothbrush and toothpaste on the sink with a little note encouraging them to brush before he leaves for the North Pole. This could trigger positive dental hygiene behavior in kids who don’t like brushing.

The Baker Elf: Have your elf leave out all of the dry ingredients to make a batch of healthy oatmeal raisin cookies asking the kids to leave him one for his long trip back to the North Pole.

The Sandman Elf: Encourage a drama-free bedtime by leaving a new pair of holiday pajamas or a new set of holiday sheets with a note from your elf, asking your children to get to bed on time so he can make his way back to report to Santa!

The holidays are a great way to foster teachable moments with your children — let the Elf be your secret weapon!
