In our 2nd instalment of “Meet the team”, John Hodkinson talks us through his love for watching Formula 1, how he nearly formed a career in electrical and mechanical engineering and the embarrassment of having to admit he has built apps for WP7.

John assures me that an iron has been ordered from Amazon.

Tell us a bit about what you do at Paid

I’m John Hodkinson and I am a Software Engineer at Paid. I help design architecture and build lighting fast code for our core cloud services, as well as contribute the dev-ops and general architecture strategies.

What does your day-to-day look like?

My day to day role would normally include discussing, designing and building new features for Paid’s core microservices. I am heavily involved in the contract service and architecture at the moment, as well as planning and designing our future direction for our API architecture.

What were you doing before you worked at Paid?

After leaving secondary school I initially studied Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, its at this point I fell in love with programming and decided to transition to a computer science pathway.

Since then I have had 10+ years working in the software industry where I have built applications for mobile (Android, iOS and shamefully WP7) and the web in technologies including F#, C# & Node.js.

If you weren’t at Paid, what would you be doing?

Hopefully breaking boundaries working in an equally challenging environment. I love solving problems and if I could solve difficult problems for products which are making a positive difference in the world, I am very happy.

Maybe pursuing a startup venture of my own is another option though for sure.

Tell us something unexpected about yourself.

I love to watch, read and attend the F1.
